I'm just curious how other people started with polymer clay.
I began as a painter (not a very good one) and then tried a few other different crafts. I couldnt seem to quite get into any of them. Then a friend told me that she was using polymer clay a lot and she gave me some. I made my first project (a turtle) and I WAS HOOKED!!!
I havent been doing it for very long and I'm not nearly as good as some of the other people in the community but i'm having a blast. And I've found that it's actually a really good way to spend time with my kids. (To them it's like play-dough)
Anyways, so I was just curious how others have fallen into the powerful grips of the polymer clay craft? |

Well, for me, I'm a teacher, and I am always looking for crafts for my kids to do. A few years back I found polymer clay in the craft store, and although I didn't get it for my students, I got hooked myself! My only problem is I just wish I had more time to work with it.
FYI: We're trying to get a bead swap going on another forum here, why not consider it? Might be fun!

I also have to give credit to the kids for getting this all started.
My son wanted to do a project, and we started with white Sculpey III.
What I love most about doing clay is the colors!
I am a very hands on person so this craft is perfect for me!!
My husband is very supportive of the clay habits in my house, this has
helped so much.

My first attempt at polymer clay was quite a few years ago before I had the internet and learned about the medium's potential. I had purchased a book and a multi-pack and tried reproducing the floral brooches in the book. They turned out, but after a while I got bored and put it away.
A couple of months ago I needed three birthday gifts for three different people, no funds at the time and had only 2 days to come up with something. By now I had seen what artists were creating with polymer clay and was inspired to try again.
I pulled out that multi-pack of Fimo and decided to wing it. I didn't have time for anything large or complex (not that I was ready to try) and came up with three brooches - an elderly woman's face, a dog holding a bone, and a young girl with blonde pigtails. The reaction was exactly what makes being an artist worthwhile and from there on I've been hooked on working with polymer clay.
I've only been making "PinHeads" so far, but now I'm ready to try creating some small more detailed sculptures and jewellery. I've met some of the nicest, friendliest people who are either polymer clay artists and/or enthusiasts. There's something about this medium that seems to bring people together. I'm glad I decided to give it another try! |
