I'm new to the polymer clay scene and can't wait to get started. My focus is going to be on little figurines - between 2" and 5" tall - and I'm curious on others' insight on preferred brand of clay.
I'm especially concerned with color transfer...will it stain my hands and then in-turn transfer to another piece of clay? How easy is it to condition? Is it sticky to work with? Does it hold shape well?
What kind of tools should I invest in? What kind of "gadgets" have you found around the house or elsewhere that you find invaluable?
Thanks for your insight. |

I have not done any figurines, so I am not sure what clay works the best. I do think that it is a personal choice. I do know that a number of artists talk about Cernit, Kato and Fimo Classic being good for sculpting.
As to color transferring. I have had problems with reds, greens and black (or any really intense colors). I solve it by have wipes near by (like baby wipes). I also wash my hands in between condition colors and work from the lighter clay to the darker.
The tool question is harder! I tend to see anything as a tool that I can use with clay! I have claimed many an item for my clay. (Once I use it for clay it stays in the clay room).
I have many cookie cutters for shapes, I do use the smaller ones the most. I also use spoons, both the bowl part and the handle. The tips of pins make great holes and stuff. My fav tools right now are leather texturing tools.
I hope that that helps, a lttle. I have found that just getting my hands in the clay and seeing what I come up with is fun and a great way to learn.
Best of luck and enjoy your clay.
Helen

| Thank you Helen. I've seen most people say it's all a matter of personal preference, so I guess I'll stop analyzing and start doing!! |
