Can someone help me with my problem?? My finished projects are always sticky to the feel when finished. I bake at required temp. and time then paint with an acrylic paint, air dry, then finish with a sealer. I live in So. MS. and the humidity is always very high. Perhaps this is my problem...... Thanks for any suggestions. |

Hi Daisy! I live in Texas, so I can relate to the heat and humidity issues. With the final project being sticky, it sounds like the sealer is the problem. What sealer are you using, and is it a sealer you've used before? I use Future or Sculpey Glaze as sealers for my polymer clay projects. I've noticed that the higher the humidity, the longer the drying time for both Future and Sculpey Glaze. My experience has been that the Sculpey Glaze is especially susceptible to the higher humidity when it comes to drying to the point of losing its tackiness.
Something that works well for me is to pre-heat my oven to about 170 degrees (I use a dedicated toaster oven for most of my pc projects); then I turn the oven off; and then I place my project, which I've already sealed with Future or Sculpey Glaze, in the oven and let it dry there. I don't use a higher oven temperature, or leave the oven on while the item is in there, because my experience has been that it is too easy to scorch the sealer. I think it is the lack of humidity, moreso than the heat, that helps to set the sealer. Perhaps this will work for you.
Like any other technique, don't try this for the first time with a prized project! I hope this works for you. |

| Naomi, thanks for the suggestion on how to seal against humidity. I'll give this a try and let you know if it works here in MS. |
