I am finally getting into clay sculpting! I've had it a while, and today I sat down with some clay, and made this:
It took me about 20 minutes to make this. I know it's far from perfect, but this is the first semi-serious attempt I've made at clay (and the second time I've played with it at all)... and it was done using only a mechanical pencil and my hands. The sculpture is really small (about 1.5" tall), so I couldn't get much detail in... but my mom says it reminds her of Alec Guinness (or however you spell it - the guy who played Obi-Wan in the original Star Wars movies).
So, how did I do? |

That's a great start! Not bad at all for your first piece.
If you want to take the detail and realisim to the next level I would suggest using something like Jack Johnston clay to get a more realalistic skin tone and then getting some white clay for the eyes, or just painting them white would work too.
Here's the link to the skin color clay I mentioned:

That clay works really well for making faces, its pretty soft and doesnt require much kneading.
Again, very nice work for your first piece. I'm very interested to see more, keep on posting! |

Wow! Good job! You should definitely persue the art. You've done really well for a first attempt. It looks really good. You might also consider trading the mechanical pencil for a set of sculpting tools. Nothing fancy necessary, but you'll probably find they're more versatile for lines and details.
I hope you keep going and post your work. I'm looking forward to seeing more!

| I'm impressed with your first try. I'm even more impressed that your only tools were your hands, and a mechanical pencil. The mouth, and nose, are expressive. I get the impression of your subject having an expression of distain. I like that the profile view shows a jawline, and neck, that are distinct and proportionate. Did you use a model for your sculpting? I'm looking forward to seeing your more of your efforts. I hope you will continue to post pictures! |

Thank you for your kind comments, everyone!

I didn't, but I'm so used to drawing faces that I knew basically where all the features were. I used to study comic art, which probably explains why it looks proportionate, yet a bit cartoonish. |
