I have run into a few places where cornstarch was mentioned when baking beads. What for? Does it ruin the smooth surface of the bead? Send me in the correct direction to find out about this please. I am very new to polymer clay work. I know very little about using it. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of a few books in the mail to start learning more. The work I have seen is amazing.

Hi Denise,
What I understand about cornstarch is that it is used as a mold release agent. It acts as a barrier to keep the object being molded from sticking to the mold. Some people use talcum powder, but cornstarch is better because you can wash it off the clay even after baking. Talcum powder will leave a residue if you're not careful.
I'd be interested in hearing about any other uses for cornstarch with polymer clay!
