I've been told by many that you can bake clay projects the 20 min. and then rebake as needed if adding additional elements. Well, I baked my first few projects this week and while I think I left them in too long, based on what's been said here my problem may be the temp. more than the timing.
The white items look at bit to gray or darker, the bright yellow item looks like its been at the beach too long and my favorite, which was a copy of a project I saw on the Carol Duvall show, a dragon. I noticed that the colors seemed as if the had darkend, partifularly the lighter colors.
Is this perhaps because my oven is running hotter than the gauge indicates? Do I need to get a seperate PC dedicated oven or a oven thermometer to fix the problem. Or, is this what every body is getting, which I doubt.
I'm new to clay and to this site. so any good advice or direction is appreciated.
Christine, Chicago, IL
Any PC events in my area that anyone is aware of?, send me a message if you want. Thanks |

Hi Christine,
I've had scorching before, and it was because I accidently left something in the oven way too long. If that's not the case with you, then I would say that maybe your oven is baking at a higher temp than you think. An oven temp gauge just might fix the problem. I don't care for toaster ovens because of the size limits and the fact that it seems it would be very easy to scorch based on how small the oven is. I never bake over 275 degrees.

Hi Christina
Check the temp. of your oven with an oven thermometer. If it is ok, then it may be the clay you are using. Some of the clays change color when baking and burn easier.
I have forgotten items in the oven and accidently baked things for more than eight hours with no problem.
Hope this helps.

Hello: I was told that whites and translucents burn quickly and easily so watch those. Also, I found that darker greens seem to get alot darker sometimes.
take care |
