I've found that a little black and decker food chopper is a great help to conditioning old clay. Slice it into smaller pieces and don't fill the machine more than half-way. It will crumble into tiny crumbles, but as it conditions it will start making larger and larger pieces. (A drop of baby oil also helps, but does leave a "greasy" feeling.) When the crumbles are slightly smaller than a small grape, dump the clay out and roll with a roller for a while. Or pour it into a plastic bag and knead like bread dough.
(I have a lot of old clay that I have saved this way.)
