Hello!
I'm very new to this clay thing but I just purchased clay, molds and tools and awaiting them to be shipped to my home. I can't wait to get them and begin. I've seen tons of project tutorials online and can't wait to make some things. My biggest interest is just see'ing what I can make with them. I'm looking to make some things to give as gifts and if I get good enough hoping to go to a craft market to show my things off for sale. I'm not sure how good I'll be but I'm hoping with inspiration and motivation I'll really pick up fast and get the nitch of it. I'm hoping to make a good variety of things.
I'm thankful to have joined and can't wait to become crafty with clay. My current hobbies include beaded jewelry, sewing and knitting. I find myself getting involved with several hobbies so I don't get bored. I've been wanting to try clay for sometime now but wasn't sure if I could do it. I'm hoping with molds I'll be able to pick it up pretty quickly.
My only question right now without having messed with clay is I'm not huge into painting small things like the clay projects...so if I put the clay in the mold by the colors of the eyes as black and the black nose and press brown around the rest of it, let's say for a teddy bear..does this usually work?? Or do I have to actually get the nitch of painting as well?? What's better and what comes out better?? Also once the clay has been baked, do you always sand it and then put the gloss on it?
Anyone find anything that they didn't realize in the beginning but now want to share with newbies? I'd love to hear!
Thanks in advance,

Hi Crafty,
Using colored clay in the molds works just fine, you don't have to paint anything if you don't want. That's whats so great with the variety of clay colors available. You can also mix the colors to come up with your own pallette, they blend very well. Sanding is usually something I do when I'm making jewelry and I want a very smooth finish. When making characters I don't find that it's that necessary. I use Sculpey Glaze Gloss for a shiny finish on my work. It's optional whether to use it or not, it just depends on how you want the finished piece to appear.
Hope this helps!
