Hi,
I have a clay dedicated food processor that I use sometimes to condition clay. Break the clay up in pieces, then a little at a time put in the food processor and grind it in little pieces. Then clump it together in a ball and start trying to condition it by hand. Add the Fimo mix quik to the processor which will make it easier too. The friction from the blades create heat, and breaking the clay up in smaller pieces helps too.
Hope this helps!

I have carpal tunnel, so I know how horrible it can be to try and condition old clay. My method is putting it in a baggy and leaving it in my pocket for a while, pulling it out and squishing it around once in awhile. Another way I've softened is mixing in just a bit of liquid sculpey (which is way cheaper than mix quik) but it gets pretty messy sometimes. Good luck.
