Below is the result of my experiment to try and create a miniature cola drink using black and translucent clay. The cola drinks below are about 3/4th of an inch tall.
I found that:
- Translucent Fimo makes the better translucent clay for the job because it really becomes almost transparent after making. Please see the cola in the middle of the picture. The other two were made with sculpey.
- Translucent liquid Fimo also makes the best transparent liquid effect.
- You can only use a darker color for drinks because light colors are unable or would hardly show up from behind the translucent clay and make it look very faulty.
A few problems that I have that I would like some tips to make this better.
- Is there a better way of creating the drinking glasses in uniform widths and heights? So far my only effort of doing so is to go ahead and make each one and just sand them to perfection. Thankfully translucent clay will let you sand it without leaving cracks but be careful not to sand too deeply.
- Is there a way to control the air bubbles? I found the effect surprising since it makes a good mock ice cubes but I was wondering if there was a way to control that. The only way I can seem to control it is to make the translucent skin as thin as I could.
- What kind of material can be used as a straw? Not just any straw but an item that would perfectly mimmick a drink straw that wouldn't melt or burn when baked. I was thinking of using strips of painted wood or toothpicks but they're either too thick or when painted, too woody.
Any tips and techniques or perhaps suggestions to a clay brand better suited for this piece would be highly appreciated. |
