The best part, were the many things I learned while doing this project. My next project will be much better, thanks to lessons learned from this one! That is why this one took so long, I'm learning as I go & am ready to buy some colored-clay now!

I have been planning to expand my jewelry art to Poly-Clay for some time. I purchased three good books on the process. Each book cautions that you should NEVER bake clay in any oven that you will be preparing food in!! They say that, when baking, the clay releases a small amount of toxic gasses & that continually baking clay & food is ill-advised! I'm new and not trying to be a "know it all", but I am concerned for everyone's health! I got a toaster oven for $18.00 at Walmart! (and it wasn't even on sale!).

I just started looking into polymer clay and I'm having a hard time finding answers to a couple questions...
What happens when you expose already cured clay to heat? I've seen candle holders and what not, so I'm assuming its ok...I've also read that its ok to make cups..like the kind you drink out of and its completly ok after its cured...could you make any other dishes that could be applyed to heat after cured? I just want a little more information on it..

I was also wondering..when covering items..can you use super glue? Is it ok to bake the super glue with the clay? I don't have any of the glues that I've been reading about..I've only bought a couple different colors of clay so far to start with, So I don't have anything fancy yet!

Thanks for reading! ^_^

Susan, that was quite helpful. It was nice to know what to "expect" from the clay. Like I wasn't sure how to tell if it was done and that it still would be flexible! Thanks for that link.

Hi there,

I only bake in the oven so I don't have much experience with using Toaster Ovens for Polymer Clay. I did find a lot of information on baking in general on the Glass Attic site, here is a link:
http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/baking.htm

Check this out and see if if gives you the information you need.

Regards,
I'm fairly new to Polymer. I've baked in my oven before with no problems. Now that I want to start doing it more often, I thought it would be better to use a toaster oven. If I'm going to be doing it on a regular basis, it's probably safer than having those fumes in my oven where I cook food for my family. I would be willing to bake it in my oven if there is a safe way to do it. I'm not cleaning my oven after every time I bake clay.

I thought I read somewhere that you can bake in your oven in a shoe box and then take the box outside to open it and it will contain all of the fumes. I can't find anything about now. Does anyone know about this?

So in attempt to not use my regular oven, I got a small toaster oven. I'm using sculpey III and it says 15 minutes but it is burned before it even gets to 5. I mean it looks like the top of an oreo cookie. I baked it on a ceramic tile with a foil tent over it to defer the heat. I baked it at the lowest temp possible. I baked it in another toaster oven and got the same results. I'm starting to feel less like I'm doing crafts and more like I'm doing a science experiment.

The most frustrating part I think is that books and internet research have gotten me no where. It's like the entire section on baking it says "oh yeah, then you bake it. No big deal" and doesn't talk about all of these problems that I've been running into.

Hi Everyone,

I'm fairly new to polymer clay, and I've started finding all kinds of neat tools that aren't specifically made for clay, but they work great for detailing and decorating.

I'm curious if anyone on here has ever tried to use a cake decorating icing bag and piping tip to make details with the clay. I realize that as is, the clay would probably be too hard/firm to squeeze through the tip. I was thinking that possibly mixing liquid clay with regular clay would maybe work. I've also heard of the air dry clay being very soft and sticky (almost icing consistency).

I didn't want to ruin a perfectly good cake decorating set or invest the money in one if it is not going to work, so I thought I'd ask if anyone on here has ever tried anything like this before.

Thanks,
Lindsay

I have a couple things listed, just to try, but it is 100% free. And you can leave your ads up as long as you like.
